In this xDesign training series, I will show step by step how to design a gear mechanism from start to finish with xDesign, the Cloud solution of SOLIDWORKS. Moreover, I am designing on an Android tablet to show the mobile experience throughout the series. In this overview, we’ll take a quick look at the content featured throughout the series. Since we’ll be designing on a tablet, we’ll learn about the features of the toolbar that comes with the touch mode command. But first, let’s take a brief look at the story behind the Gear Ring design.
I first came across this ring on the internet and noticed that different content creators had produced their own versions as well. I have a strong passion for mechanisms. That’s why I was fascinated by the design and decided to create my own interpretation from scratch using xDesign. My goal was both to explore the software and to turn my passion for mechanisms into an enjoyable project through this ring design. Throughout this project, I wanted to share what I learned and the experiences I gained, hoping to inspire others who share the same passion.
We will design and assemble a different part in each section. Before moving on to the next part of the series, make sure you have the following information about the commands that come with the touch interface.
From the View tab in the Action Bar, you can activate Touch Mode. Once enabled, the command icons in the Action Bar will appear larger. An additional helper bar, as shown in the image, will also become active.
In the table below, you can see the shortcut keys in touch mode. Each shortcut shows how it is used on a tablet.
Discover the Gear Ring design! Rotate, zoom in, and view it in 3D in your home with AR.
In the next chapter, we’ll begin designing the first component of the ring: the Gear Ring.
